Whether you’re hosting a casual party or want to serve a cheese platter French-style after dessert, here are 3 pairings for the tastiest cheeseboard to really impress your guests. You'll find my top tip to a sentational cheeseboad too:
1. Stick to three cheeses
It’s really easy to overload your cheeseboard with too many varieties. Stick to three generous portions and you should be able to feed a crowd. Cheeses with different textures and flavours are a good idea. Balance a hard, nutty cheese with a creamy Blue and a mild gooey Shamembert (it’s my favourite Honestly Tasty cheese).
2. Mix crispness with fruitiness
Ever wondered why there are always grapes on a cheeseboard? They’re there as a natural palate cleanser. You should eat a piece of cheese, then a grape before moving onto your next cheese. Good to know, right. Generously pile crisp and juicy grapes, as well as colourful seasonal fruits like strawberries, sliced peaches, figs and nectarines around your cheeses.
3. Balance sweetness and saltiness
When it comes to additional sides, it’s best to keep them simple. You don’t need a relish and pickle with every cheese you choose. Simply add a bowl of pitted olives and a jar of fig jam. I like to add bean-chorizo stuffed medjool dates too. They add a spicy-sweetness to the board.
And here’s my top tip: add interesting extra crunchiness
Of course all cheeseboards have crackers or a loaf of crusty bread. The secret to a really sensational board is to add an extra crunch in interesting ways. Think candied walnuts, homemade pear crisps, toasted pumpkin seeds or homemade seed crackers and you get the idea.
Build your board in 5 easy steps
Start by placing your cheese on your board, with good spacing between. You can cut a few initial pieces to encourage your guests to tuck in. Make sure each cheese needs its own knife so there’s no mixing of flavours.
Add your bowl of olives and jar of fig jam with spoon in the centre of your board.
Generously swirl your fruits around your cheeses. Think about your colours. A variety of greens, reds, oranges and deep purples make a beautiful board.
Fill the edges and any gaps with your crackers. Play with the shapes and lay them at different angles.
Top with your extra crunchy bits. Pear crisps on top of your nutty hard cheese and candied walnuts scattered over a soft cheese would work perfectly.
When asked which plant-based cheese I use, I always recommend Honestly Tasty. I love their cheese! I use them for all my cheeseboards and they’re always a hit at my supper clubs and catered platters. And there’s nothing like a posh Shamembert and tomato toastie on a rainy day. Yum yum!
